Lallana Header Gives Poortvleit First Win At Derby

Saints secured their first win of the season at Derby as they won 1-0 courtesy of a second half Lallana header. It was the first time Saints had won a league match at Derby since 1989. Saints dominated large parts of the game as they passed the ball with precision which left Derby in the wake. The goal came in the 57th min as the Derby keeper saved twice from Lallana only for his header to bounce over the line. The Saints should have notched a bigger win as they carved open the Derby defence with ease. Unlike in the previous two games Saints played to the end and got their reward of three points. The win is a nice shot in the arm following the two opening defeats and the hope is that it gives a confidence boost to the numerous youngsters who now are first team regulars. Saints next league match is at St Mary's on Skysports Sunday 31st 12.45pm KO. Before that there is a Cup match against Birmingham at St Marys . Goal Video

Defender Arrives On Loan But Plenty Still Available To Go

Saints have brought in young defender Jack Cork from Chelsea to bolster the paper thin backline. The 19yr old can play across the back and has also played in midfield. The four month loan move comes following the sale of defender Andrew Davies to Stoke City. I think most fans would of expected to see a semi experienced defender come in but maybe Cork can do a job. Saints though are still trying to unload a number of players. Everyone knows Rudi Skacel is available and that he currently hasn't found anyone to match his wage demands he's getting at Saints. Jan Poortvliet has also stated that goalkeeper Kelvin Davis is available. It's thought Stoke might be interested in him. Defender Wayne Thomas is another player up for grabs. Bradley Wright Phillips can go for the right offer. Jason Euell is also part of the mass clearout if anyone can match his current wages. Saints have not denied the media report that Andrew Surman is being touted around.

Whose The Team Manager Lowe or Poortvliet ?

Lowe/Wilde have tried to shut the stable door after the horse has bolted with a nice PR jobbie on the departing Andrew Davies. Poortvliet was quoted after the Birmingham match that he didn't know what was going on with Davies. It's a can of worms because there is a serious issue that Rupert Lowe is again inteferring with team affairs. Poortvielt has had no direction in any of the signings this summer for starters. So is Poortvliet another Gray/Wigley 'patsy' ? I've not seen anything to date to think otherwise and with Michael Wilde a 'plastic' football chairman the situation doesn't bode well. Saints are very weak in defence and Svensson will not be able to play week in week out. So to allow Andrew Davies to leave seems criminal. It's also been disclosed that Wayne Thomas is also up for sale. I don't know about you but im bored with this 'high wages' and bank line rolled out when convienent. The problem is such is the bullshitting record of Wilde & Lowe you really do wonder what exactly is the truth.

Early Promise Fades To Brum Defeat

Jan Poortvliet's first league game at St Mary's ended in defeat as Birmingham came from behind to win 2-1. Saints dominated the first half with a series of chances. Passing the ball around well it left Birmingham always chasing the ball. Saints finally got their reward just before halftime as Perry jumped highest from a corner to nail a great header into the goal. The turning point of the whole match came in the second minute of the restart as McGoldrick crossed to a unmarked John infront of goal but he headed wide. It was a glorious chance to double the lead. The miss was to prove costly as the next attack saw Birmingham level as O'Conner bundled home the ball from close range. The goal was a shot in the arm for Birmingham. Saints faded badly in midfield and at the back. Kevin Phillips came on fiftenn minutes from the end to a chorus of boos. But got the last laugh as he poked home the winner with his second touch. So its two games down with two defeats and Saints now travel to Derby who haven't won a league game in 34 matches.
